In Nord-du-Québec, one of the largest municipal governments in the world by land area, a major challenge emerged. Following the retirement of a long-serving General Manager, the local government was in search of a new leader capable of navigating a complex environment marked by cultural and political challenges. Previous recruitment attempts—both by external firms and internal networks—had been unsuccessful. It was in this context that Fauve was brought in to expand the search and identify the ideal candidate for this critical mandate.
Recruiting a General Manager for such a vast and remote municipality came with multiple challenges. The geographical location, deep in the heart of Nord-du-Québec, was a major hurdle. The selected candidate had to be not only willing to relocate to an isolated region but also have a deep understanding of local issues and the dynamics among stakeholders, including council members representing Cree and Jamesian communities. Additionally, full-time on-site presence was essential to build credibility and understand the community's challenges.
Fauve adopted a collaborative and strategic approach to address these challenges. We began by conducting in-depth discussions with council members to understand their expectations and the challenges facing the community. This active listening enabled us to position the role as a concrete opportunity to contribute to the vitality of a unique region, rich in history, knowledge, and connection to the land. By emphasizing the advantages of living in an exceptional natural environment—along with competitive compensation and attractive living conditions—we were able to attract candidates with not only the required competencies but also the right mindset for the challenge.
The recruitment process resulted in the selection of a candidate whose visionary leadership quickly transformed the management function and approach within the organization. With a leadership style rooted in collaboration, active listening, and service, she established trust-based relationships with the community and stakeholders. Her impact was immediate, promoting modernization of management practices and better integration of local concerns into strategic decisions. This recruitment not only filled a key role but also ushered in a new era of collaboration and development for the region.
