Ensuring Continuity in a Regional Research Institution
Context
A research and innovation centre based in Eastern Quebec was preparing for a critical leadership transition following the planned retirement of its long-standing General Director. This organization plays a strategic role in advancing applied research across a range of sectors, serving both public and private partners.
The succession came at a pivotal moment, as the institution sought to consolidate its positioning, strengthen its partnerships, and ensure continuity of governance while preparing for the next cycle of development and regional impact.
Challenges
The mandate was shaped by several structural and geographic constraints. First, the regional setting limited access to experienced executives familiar with the realities of applied research and capable of relocating to a less urban area. Second, the combination of scientific credibility, organizational leadership, and community engagement proved difficult to source in one profile.
The outgoing General Director had built deep institutional knowledge and long-term relationships. Replacing this profile required identifying a candidate able to preserve that legacy while bringing a fresh perspective.
Our Approach
Fauve took the time to understand the unique governance model of the organization, as well as the expectations of its board of directors and institutional partners. We collaborated closely with local stakeholders to clarify the balance between operational management, external representation, and innovation leadership.
Given the geographic realities, the search focused on candidates with strong personal motivations and ties to the region. We also paid close attention to succession alignment: the ability to lead in continuity while preparing the next chapter.
The process included significant communication with the board, transparent expectations setting, and real-time adjustments to account for candidate availability and relocation dynamics.
The Impact
The selected leader had previously held executive responsibilities in a similar context and demonstrated a strong capacity to mobilize networks while fostering internal cohesion. Their presence brought reassurance to internal teams and institutional partners, helping to stabilize the leadership transition.
The organization now benefits from a renewed direction aligned with its mandate, regional commitments, and long-term strategic ambitions. The transition was successfully managed with dignity, foresight, and collaboration—a testament to the shared commitment of all parties involved.
